My name is Jennifer Huckleberry, I am a two time Breast Cancer Survivor. The first time I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 at 35 years old – I was in complete shock. I was overwhelmed with everything I needed to do… not to mention scared.
I had my first surgery on my left breast along with radiation and chemo. I believed everything was good and only needed to reconstructive surgery. Then, in 2007, during a basic routine exam with my oncologist, they felt another lump in the right side breast.
In the meanwhile, I had taken and tested positive for the Brac II Test and have had three negative cancer tumors so far – I didn’t want to take any more chances with my health. I opted for the second surgery. Having cancer has educated me on things I need to do to improve my health such as not smoking, exercising and losing weight.
I was fortunate that when I discovered I had cancer, I did have medical insurance and they took care of a majority of my medical expenses. But there are many women with breast cancer that cannot get a ride to the doctor much less afford needed surgery. I want to try to help these women with small financial grants so they can buy the medications or help with the doctor bills. I believe if we give a little back to someone who really needs our help, we will make a difference in their lives and hopefully make it easier for them to fight and beat cancer…
